Virgin Mobile shuts down and transfers customers to BoostVirgin Mobile shut down operations in January 2020 and transferred all its customers to Boost such, we won't be updating our review for Virgin Mobile, but you can read our full review of Boost right last time I used Virgin Mobile, I was in college and using a shiny new flip-phone (well, more of a slider). Not to date myself, but Virgin Mobile has changed a lot since my college days. Now there are no more flip-phones, and there are some interesting member perks. But those perks also come with quite a few not-so-great limitations, which is why we only gave it one-and-a-half stars. All-in-all, we think Virgin is still a great pick for a college student or someone who needs just one phone line. This plan has one line, unlimited talk and text, and a minimum of 5 to 35 GB of unthrottled (full-speed) data. Here's a look at the most inexpensive version of the plan. Virgin Mobile Unlimited Plan with 5 GB of data If you want a Virgin Mobile plan with more than a piddling 5GB of data, you can go up to the 10 GB or "Unlimited" (which is actually 35 GB) data options. Virgin Mobile $45 and $60 Unlimited Plans Virgin Mobile Family Plans Unfortunately you'll be limited to just one line with Virgin—there are no family plans available, which means there are no multi-line discounts, So you’ll be paying at least $35 each month for each line. That adds up quick if you need a phone line for more than just you. Essentially, two lines will cost you $70. To compare, Visible Wireless can get you up to four lines, each with unlimited data, for $100 (and Visible's Verizon-run network is better than Virgin's Sprint-run network). Visible Wireless plan with four lines Data throttling There are some limitations on your data even before you reach your full-speed data limit on a Virgin Mobile plan. Your video, music, and game streams will be throttled. Here's a breakdown of the speeds you'll get, and some other perks that will cost you extra. Sure, you can keep using data, but your downloads will be like watching paint dry and your video streams will buffer more than a late-night janitor who’s cleaning the floors. Not to mention that 23 GB pales in comparison to 35 GB of unthrottled high-speed data from MetroPCS. If you really want to go big and stream all your favorite Hulu shows without feeling like time has stopped, check out T-Mobile’s 50 GB of unthrottled data or the Verizon Above Unlimited plan’s 75 GB of unthrottled data. Oh em gee. What’s the best cell phone plan? Virgin Mobile member benefits We used to rave about Virgin Mobile's awesome member benefits here, like 25% off and free shipping from Reebok. But those benefits are no more. Virgin seems to have slashed all of its fun discounts and perks so you'll just left with a standard old cell phone plan (what is this, the 2010s?). If you're looking for snazzy bonuses, like access to HBO and other premium channels, then check out AT&T’s Unlimited plans. Virgin Mobile phonesYou can get the latest devices, unless those devices are made by Google With Virgin you can buy the latest devices from most of the major companies, including Apple, Samsung, and LG. One notable exception is the Google Pixel, which Virgin doesn't sell. For example, here's what it would look like to buy a new iPhone 11 Pro Max 64 GB phone when you sign up for Virgin's $60 Unlimited Plan. Virgin Mobile’s Bring Your Own Phone program is limited to iPhones—and you might not even be able to bring older iPhone models, either. Virgin doesn’t explicitly state this, but we can all take the hint when we see “We support the models of iPhone below, but all are not compatible with our network” in the FAQs. How good is Virgin Mobile performance?Virgin runs on Sprint’s network, so don’t expect stellar coverage or speed. Virgin Mobile runs on Sprint’s network, so don’t be surprised if you run into some of the same coverage and speed issues as Sprint users. What can we say? Third-party tests ranked Sprint’s coverage as third or fourth out of the top four cell providers (that top four includes Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile).3, 4 Of course, coverage depends on the area you’re in, so you may get lucky and never see “No service” pop up on your screen. Because of this, we recommend checking Virgin’s coverage map to get an idea of whether your location is covered—or not. Speed on the Sprint network is a similar story. Three different independent companies pretty much came to a consensus that Sprint is dead last for 6, 7 But low ratings aside, we’ve used Sprint for a while and experienced few speed or coverage issues in both Washington state and Utah. So take those ratings as you will. Dealing with Virgin Mobile customer serviceIf Virgin Mobile played Super Mario, it wouldn’t collect enough stars to beat the game. The customer service ratings don’t look so great for Virgin Mobile8—but we’ll caution you that most cell phone companies are in the same boat. That’s right, wireless providers are pretty notorious for poor customer service. We agree that’s no excuse, but it does mean you’ll want to take a deep breath and focus on remaining patient when you do need to reach out to a representative. If you hate phone trees and waiting on hold, you could send a few hashtags Virgin’s way on social media. Is Virgin Mobile the one for you? Here are our thoughts. Plans: Virgin’s plans come loaded with limitations: you get only one line per account, and your video streaming is stuck in standard definition (480p). (Not to mention your music and gaming speeds are limited too.) You’ll also need to pay extra for international calling and a mobile hotspot. Performance: Virgin runs on Sprint’s not-so-highly-rated network, so your service may drop and your speed may stutter if you don’t live solidly within a Sprint coverage area. Customer service: Customers don’t have high praise for Virgin’s service team, but Twitter seems to work. We recommend reaching out on social media so you can at least play a game of Heroes of the Storm while you wait. Overall: If you’re single or just looking for a one-line phone plan, Virgin does offer low prices. But otherwise, the limitations outweigh the benefits. Is coverage better on Virgin Mobile or EE?If you’ve been on Virgin Mobile for a while, you might remember that they used to use EE’s network for coverage. That’s no longer the case, as Virgin now use Vodafone’s network, while EE own and operate gives Virgin an advantage for call signal (3G/2G). Their hostscover more of the geographic area of the UK than EE do, and their indoor coverage tends to be a bit better as EE hold a clear advantage for 4G data (see 5G below). In fact we’d say it’s the best thing about being on EE. They cover more of the UK’s landmass for 4G and more of the areas where people way, it’s worth checking both networks' latest coverage checkers before signing up to see which one has better reception in your area. That doesn’t sound like a massive difference, but there’s more to it:EE will only declare that a location is covered once 5G is available in at least 50% of that location’s area. Some networks declare theirs after only covering a few not only do EE cover potentially way more locations than Virgin, but they tend to have better coverage within their locations. Along with their brilliant 4G coverage, these speeds are one of the main reasons to join on the EE network:Results from independent network testers Opensignal show that 4G speeds on EE are around Mbps against Virgin’s average speeds of Mbps. That’s a pretty big speeds in urban areas can be around 80 - 110 Mbps on both networks. In more rural areas Virgin often slows down to a crawl, while EE stays around a decent 10 - 20 if you’re an urban dweller and you want fast speeds, both networks are good options. But we think you’re more likely to get consistently strong 5G speeds on EE. Either way, they’re not massively different. But only EE let you transfer a call from WiFi to 4G and vice versa without your call dropping (check your phone's supported).Also Virgin support fewer models than EE (check yours here). And as soon as you lose WiFi signal or 4G signal, we found that your call will drop. It’s just not as slick a the end, EE has one of our favourite WiFi calling schemes, while Virgin’s is still a bit limited in our view, though it has got better over link: Our best-rated networks for WiFi calling✔ Virgin Mobile offer a massive network of WiFi hotspotsSince Virgin Media are also a broadband company, it makes sense that Virgin Mobile are able to offer the second largest network of WiFi hotspots in the UK. EE offer comparatively only offer 250+ hotspots on the London Underground. These are only at ticket barriers and stations, but not yet in the tunnels themselves. It’s a shame they don’t get any of BT’s 5 million+ hotspots despite EE being owned by the other hand, you’ll get access to Virgin’s million+ hotspots on all of their plans. Their app has been subject to poor reviews, but it should be able to log you in EE, Virgin get you WiFi hotspots on the London Underground. EE’s WiFi calling is easier to get working and generally works better than Virgin’s."Compare pricing and deals Which is the best for unused data?There are a few networks with data rollover. This is where the data you don’t get through in one month gets added onto your data allowance for your next month. Both Virgin and EE offer this in some any of Virgin Mobile’s plans the data you don’t manage to get through will be automatically added onto your next month’s allowance. It can help prevent you from going over your allowance if you have a bit only get to keep it for a month, however. It’s nowhere near as generous as Sky’s, which lets you keep unused data for 3 years, trade it in for discounts on devices and share it with other users on your account (see Sky’s scheme here).You’ll get through your rolled over data first, so you have the chance to use it up before it’s gone and you have the chance to get rolled over data again. The only way to get data rollover on EE is by getting a pay as you go monthly current PAYG SIM bundlesWith these bundles you’ll be able to keep your unused minutes, texts and data for a month so long as you renew your bundle. If you don’t you’ll lose them essentially the same as Virgin’s, except you don’t get it on pay monthly. This is a drawback because EE’s pay as you go bundles are fairly pricey even compared to their regular pay monthly are one of the most expensive networks. So we would like to see them add data rollover, as it would mean you could comfortably go with a smaller plan and get the most out of your data. But they don’t offer link: See latest PAYG plans"The vast majority of users will hop onto a pay monthly plan, so Virgin will be the better choice if keeping your data is a priority for you. Virgin’s deals are already better value, but with data rollover you get the most out of your deal."Compare pricing and deals There are two major benefits of getting other users onto your account with EE, whether that be adding friends or family members on new deals:The first is that you get 10% off phone contracts, SIM only plans, tablet deals or data SIMs added onto your main account - whether that be for friends or family. You also get a 1GB boost for adding new you’re also able to gift data, meaning if one of the users on your account runs out of data and another has a decent amount to spare you can transfer data over. You get a modest £2 off each added SIM. Not as impressive for savings, but Virgin are already we said, this discount is exclusive for Virgin Media customers. You can still add extra users to your account if you’re not a Virgin Media customer, but you won’t get the also don’t get any extra benefits like data sharing or anything like that. But it’s a good way for Virgin to reward loyalty, so if you’re a Virgin Media customer then this might be a decent reason to join Virgin link: Full ins and outs of Virgin Mobile family plans"It’s a bit of a shame that Virgin’s discount is exclusive to Virgin Media customers, as it is a really nice scheme on top of cheap prices. But EE’s will save you more money and data gifting is a useful way of avoiding extra charges."Compare pricing and deals If you join on any Virgin SIM only or phone plan then you’ll get access to one of Virgin’s brilliant benefits that makes it so the data you use on certain social media apps won’t come out of your you send a message over Facebook, download a picture from Whatsapp or scroll on Twitter you won’t use up any of your monthly data allowance. Video/audio calls on these apps will come out of your data basically means you’re getting unlimited data to use on these apps. It’s nice to have to have some peace of mind while you’re on social media. What’s even better is that it comes on even their cheapest plan:In fairness, messaging doesn’t use up much data in the first place. If you’re using it mostly for social media then Virgin’s benefit can help you save a bit of data, while EE’s benefits will save more data overall but come at a cost."Compare pricing and deals We look at whether Virgin or EE offer the better provision for roaming abroadLike Vodafone and Three, EE have changed their EU roaming scheme so you can no longer access your regular allowance of minutes, texts and data for free while you’re you’ll have to pay a daily rate to access your allowance. At the moment they say it’s about £2 a day while you’re in their EU destinations. Even though you’re paying, you’ll also be restricted to 50GB while you’re going further afield you’ll have to pay a daily rate for a data pass. These give you a small amount of data at fairly pricey daily rates (currently between £5 - £6 depending on the destination).Or, if you’re on a Smart Plan you can choose their Roam Abroad benefit as an extra, which lets you roam for free in their EU destinations and five worldwide destinations. But also unlike Vodafone, they’ve kept their inclusive EU roaming policy in are a few finickity fair usage policies, but unless you’re a really heavy data user we don’t think this will ever be an issue. You get one finance agreement (loan) for the cost of your phone and another payment for your usage (mins, texts data).So you get a bit of flexibility in choosing your contract length (24-month or 36-month) and you can upgrade early and leave Virgin altogether by paying off the rest of your loan all at you sign up on a 36-month contract because the monthly price is cheaper, bear in mind you’re paying the same amount in the end and three years is a long commitment. You’ll also have to pass a credit check to be in general, Virgin will work out cheaper than EE for the whole contract due to their cheaper usage plans. All of their contracts are 24-months with a single payment for the cost of your phone and usage means you can’t upgrade early or change your usage plan until your contract is up, nor can you choose a contract length to suit your budget. EE’s prices also tend to be pricier when buying directly from it might be a good idea to go with a reseller like as they buy a lot of phones in bulk to sell them at a cheaper getting the same benefits as being on EE directly and it’s not like you’re sacrificing flexibility as your contract should be the same. What about the up-and-comer, T-Mobile? After all, T-Mobile offers better prices, great perks, and solid coverage, too. So if you’re wondering which one is right for you and are thinking about switching from Verizon to T-Mobile, or vice versa, then read on in our head-to-head comparison of T-Mobile vs. Verizon. Unlimited plans Having a great cell phone plan means more than just offering the lowest monthly rate. You also need add-ons and a great balance between data, coverage, and speeds. T-Mobile simply wins this round. Not only is T-Mobile’s lone unlimited plan cheaper than any of Verizon’s unlimited options (starting at $70/month vs. $75), but it’s less restrictive, too. You only get your data slowed down if you hit 50GB during the billing period — Verizon’s similarly-priced plan, Go Unlimited, reserves the right to throttle your speed at any time. Verizon’s Beyond Unlimited gives you just a 23GB threshold, with only the Above Unlimited plan (75GB) exceeding T-Mobile’s data limit. Although both T-Mobile and Verizon Go Unlimited restrict video streaming to 480p, you can upgrade to T-Mobile One Plus for HD streaming and other extras like 10GB of LTE hotspot data and free Wi-Fi on Gogo-enabled flights– for just an extra $10/month. That’s still cheaper than T-Mobile’s Beyond Unlimited, which costs $85/month for similar extra features. Another area to note is that T-Mobile doesn’t require any contracts — you pay by the month and cancel at any time. Verizon doesn’t either, but when they did away with their 2-year contracts in 2017, they raised their activation fee from $20 to $30 and upgrade fees to $20. T-Mobile eliminated their activation fees. Each of these costs for T-Mobile includes taxes and fees, which we love: what you see is what you get– no added fees. The equivalent plan at Verizon — Beyond Unlimited — costs you $200/month. Other plans If you’re a single user who doesn’t need unlimited data, both carriers also offer a selection of prepaid plans, and T-Mobile has an Unlimited Talk and Text (no data) plan, as well — a great option for those of us who want to be less connected. Verizon T-Mobile Extra fees The “what you see is what you get” principle we commended T-Mobile for earlier still applies here: there are no extra fees — all taxes and fees are included in their listed price, and there’s not even an activation fee. Verizon, however, has a laundry list added to your monthly rate: one-time activation of $30/new line, $20/line/month line access charge, varying network surcharges, plus tax (or higher, depending on state). When it comes to contract termination fees, the good news comes from T-Mobile again: they have no contracts, so you don’t have to pay any termination fees if you cancel your account. Verizon, however, charges you between $175 and $350 to terminate your contract, depending on your device. Winner: T-Mobile for better pricing, fewer restrictions, and zero “gotchas.” Coverage T-Mobile Verizon Coverage is always a tricky category. As long as where you live is covered that’s all that really matters, right? I mean, if T-Mobile only covered Antarctica and Verizon covered all the rest, but you lived in Antarctica, then T-Mobile would be your personal winner, right? Unfortunately for T-Mobile, they don’t cover Antarctica, we don’t live there even if they did, and as a reviewer coverage area matters. While Verizon wins this category due to covering a larger percentage of the country, T-Mobile’s loss isn’t really as bad as it might look since they still cover the more populated Verizon. Performance In the 2019 OpenSignal report, OpenSignal declared Verizon the winner in nearly all their measured categories. That’s a stark contrast from previous reports, wherein OpenSignal’s own words were “accustomed to handling T-Mobile accolades”. Verizon has made a comeback in the last 6 months, with T-Mobile coming in a close second. And we do mean close second. They were only behind in 4G (a lead over Verizon in Download Speed was a tie for some reason though?). They also only lost Upload speed by Their most significant loss, in video experience, was a category that every provider was mediocre at. RootMetrics, who have declared Verizon the overall winner for 10 years, ranked them 1st once again, making this the Big Red’s 11th consecutive year topping the scoreboard. Power’s Customer Care study muddies the waters a bit by awarding T-Mobile an 833 and Verizon a second-place score of 812. You could view this as an endorsement of their customer experience, but we can tell you that when it comes to figuring out the basic details of a plan, Verizon wins hands down; we had to visit half a dozen pages to even find all the plans that T-Mobile Verizon takes the category. Phone selection Most flagship phones are available at just about every major carrier– both T-Mobile and Verizon offer the latest iPhones and Androids. However, Verizon is the only carrier who you can buy Google’s Pixel phones from directly. They also landed the Moto devices before any others, although those are now available at T-Mobile, counter, T-Mobile has a wider device selection when it comes to the more budget-conscious among us. They offer a solid selection of phones under $200 from LG and Samsung, as well as the branded Revvl. And it’s worth noting that you can buy a Pixel from Google, then take it to any carrier you want. T-Mobile - Netflix + T-Mobile Tuesdays But if you’re not a big traveler, no big deal – T-Mobile still has some perks for you. Netflix is free with 2 or more lines, and everyone regardless of number of lines has access to T-Mobile Tuesdays. T-Mobile Tuesdays provide rewards to all T-Mobile customers that can include free movies, sports tickets, and more. Nice. Verizon - Verizon Up In comparison to T-Mobile, Verizon’s perks are pretty scant. You can use data when traveling, but you need to pay an additional $5-10 per day, depending on the country, for a TravelPass. But Verizon has it’s own rewards program: Verizon Up. It’s rewards are similar to T-Mobile Tuesdays’, but Verizon has customers earn “credits” to use as currency. It works like this: spend $300 and you get a credit; for every credit you earn, that’s one reward. Winner: This one should be ultra-clear: with more perks and extras included into their monthly rates, T-Mobile easily wins this one. Recap -- who wins? There’s a reason carrier rankings are so tight at the top… so there’s just one question to ask: what do you care about most? That's an old saying, but it's one that most people keep in mind when they evaluate the latest offer from a cable company, internet service provider (ISP), or a wireless carrier. Even a company like T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS), which built its rep on giving customers what they want, got greeted with skepticism earlier this year when it announced plans to drop all taxes and that case, the deal turned out to be exactly what was promised. That's not really true, however, when you look at Sprint's (NYSE:S) offer to cut your phone bill in half made to Verizon and AT&T customers. That promotion, while a good deal, only applied to the service portion of the bill, meaning people who accept the offer won't actually see their wireless bill cut in same logic applies to many cable and ISP promotions where a short-term low price deal comes with a contract for future years that are more expensive. Pay television companies are notorious for offering prices that don't reflect the mandatory fees and surcharges customers have to of that, news that Virgin Mobile (which is operated in the United States by Sprint) would be offering a year of unlimited talk, text, and data to customers who sign up by July 31 for $1 certainly caused consumers to raise an eyebrow. It seems like a phenomenal deal, but is it too good to be true?What is Virgin Mobile doing? The company is giving away a year of unlimited service (with high-speed data capped at 23GB a month) for $1, plus applicable taxes. That deal is not made up, it's not a bait-and-switch offer, but it's also not the whole get a year of unlimited talk, text, and data for $1, the customer must purchase an Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone and transfer his or her number to Virgin's Inner Circle plan, which costs $50 a month once the promotion ends.
